Obinna Nwobodo's impact on FC Cincinnati goes far beyond the pitch as he becomes the sixth player in club history to reach 150 appearances

Obinna Nwobodo said Wednesday night, after FC Cincinnati’s 2-1 win over NYCFC, that he was surprised to learn the match was his 150th appearance for the club. That tracks, as he was also surprised 50 games ago, when he made his 100th appearance, to have reached that milestone so quickly.

The Nigerian midfielder, who at 29 has become a cornerstone of the club in his five seasons in Cincinnati, is always surprised to hear how long he’s been with The Orange and Blue because, in his opinion, time flies when you're at a place where your goals and the club's goals meet in perfect harmony.

“It feels quick, and quicker than I thought. I didn't even know; I just (found out) a few days ago, so I wasn't even expecting it. I was surprised. I had to go ask more questions just to make sure that they were not making a mistake!” Nwobodo said on Wednesday night at TQL Stadium after making his 150th appearance for FC Cincinnati. “It's a special thing for me because obviously I want to stay somewhere where we compete. I don't want to stay anywhere and then we just participate. So from the start, I knew the mentality of the team when I came that they wanted to compete, they wanted passion, they wanted people to to fight for the team, and I'm excited that since then they have not moved away from this idea, from this goal. It has always been like that. So that is what makes it too quick for me.”

A staple at FC Cincinnati, Nwobodo became just the sixth player in club history to reach the 150-match mark, joining Yuya Kubo, Nick Hagglund, Roman Celentano, Alvas Powell and Luciano Acosta in club lore as the longest tenured players for The Orange and Blue.

Nwobodo has been a cornerstone player since first arriving in 2022, when he stepped off the plane in Cincinnati after joining the club as a Designated Player following his transfer from Turkish League side Göztepe S.K., and immediately cemented his spot in the starting lineup. Since his arrival, FC Cincinnati have qualified for the playoffs every year, won the Supporters’ Shield, racked up more points than any club in MLS, and, when healthy, had the definitive defensive midfielder in the league the entire time.

From the start, I knew the mentality of the team when I came that they wanted to compete, they wanted passion, they wanted people to to fight for the team, and I’m excited that since then they have not moved away from this idea, from this goal. It has always been like that.

His impact on the team has been, in the words of his coaches and teammates, transformative and culture-setting throughout his tenure.

“He's one of the reasons that I think people talk about us in a different way than they did in 2022,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said of Obinna Nwobodo. “You look at the success we've had…Obi was at the start of it all. He came in, obviously not right at the beginning, but when he got here, things changed, and it's his mentality, it's his play on the field, it's his leadership. He's a winner.

“I talk to these guys all the time about just having winners on the field, and that doesn't mean goals and assists. It means understanding what the moment calls for to help your team, and how many times has Obi done that for us? So, yeah, he's up there as far as when you talk about players that you've worked with and coached and enjoyed good moments with. Obi's up there at the top of the list because of his positive impact and the way he goes about it.”

The 150 appearances Nwobodo has made for FC Cincinnati are the most he’s made for any club in his career, with only his 118 appearances at Újpest FC, a Hungarian first-tier side, rivaling his total with FCC.

Nwobodo’s surprise over reaching 150 appearances, or really any milestone he’s had with FCC, is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. As Nwobodo left the media Mixed Zone on Wednesday night, he joked that he’d be looking forward to speaking with everyone again the next time he reaches a milestone—his 400th appearance for the club.

But the truth of the matter is the surprise only comes from feeling so at home with the club and aligned in his ideals. Even when he sat out for a long stretch of time due to injury – missing most of the 2025 season due to a torn quadriceps tendon that needed to be surgically repaired after suffering an injury in a June match at Montréal – he still feels connected to the club’s mission, and thus is enjoying his time so much it doesn’t feel like time is going by.

“I knew I already had 100 games but it's exciting to see that the goal, the drive is still there, and when that is happening, life goes quick,” Nwobodo said of his continued time at FCC. “Games go quickly because there is always something to fight for. It's always boring when there is nothing to fight for, and then you start counting games.”

“The team has a goal…the management wants to fight, they want to equip the team, and the more they want to help you, this makes it easy for you to not know when you had 100 games like now. I didn't even know I had 150,” Nwobodo continued. “ I had surgery last year, and I missed a bunch, or most of the whole season, so I still don't know how they counted 150! But at the end of the day, I'm excited and I'm excited to keep going.”

After making his 100th appearance for FC Cincinnati in 2024, Nwobodo signed a contract extension in 2025 to stay in Cincinnati through 2027, further solidifying himself as one of the longest-tenured and central pieces of the FCC puzzle in the short and long term.

When he signed that contract, Nwobodo’s beliefs sounded nearly identical to the ones he spoke on after his 150th appearance, showing his continued passion, commitment and belief in the project he has helped shepherd along in five seasons…so far.

“For me, it means a lot because I have not played this amount on one team before. This is the first time, and I feel comfortable, I feel at home, I feel fresh," Nwobodo said in 2025 when he signed his new contract with FC Cincinnati. "That is why I'm able to say that I can keep going, because if I don't feel fresh, I don't have a new mentality, I wouldn't be comfortable renewing my contract. But I feel like I'm just arriving now. So it feels good for me and my family."

"I feel I always have good motivation here. I feel like this is something I want to continue doing. I feel fresh. I feel like a new person every (season), even if I am not," Nwobodo added with a laugh. "I didn't even remember that I've been here for almost four years. So it's something good for me. I don't feel like I've overstayed my welcome, I still feel fresh. I have guys here that are working with me, and they always help me have good motivation every time, and that helps me to focus."

"I think the mentality of the team is that we want to win every time we have so much, they still want to achieve. You can see it with the transfers, with the way the team wants to play. So this is something I feel. Because, if I'm playing in a team and I'm not comfortable – maybe the mentality is down, or there's no more motivation – then it feels like, yeah, it's time to go. But when you're playing somewhere where you see that every year they are making new plans in order to win, they're making new plans in order to keep the team at a good level. This is good. This is good for the kind of person I am, because I always want to challenge myself, and I'm glad that this team is also a team that challenges you, and they're trying to compete. They are not just participating. They compete in the league, and this is what I want. I feel comfortable being part of it."

"I think that's kind of who he is. Every time he steps on the field for training, for games, he gives everything," Noonan added on Nwobodo at the time. "Obi is hungry to help our club win trophies, and so that's, I think, what's always going to keep him fresh."

Obi Nwobodo is at 150 games played for FC Cincinnati, but certainly not satisfied with just that. With his contract locked in through 2027, he is still here for the foreseeable future, and the way Pat Noonan, Chris Albright and Nwobodo speak on the matter, there’s no reason to think it couldn’t go beyond that when the time comes.

But right now, the defensive midfielder who has earned himself the nickname “The Destroyer” is experiencing a resurgence in his performance. He has returned to his old form after an extended stretch of struggles that, in hindsight, could be chalked up to injuries dating back to the end of 2024. But since the start of the second half of the season, fresh off the MLS summer break due to the FIFA World Cup, Obi has been Obi, and his coaches have made sure to note that in both the press and in his appearances.

“I wouldn't say a new man. He looked like he's looked since the return from the break,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said of Nwobodo in a recent conversation with the media. “He looks like himself physically, mentally, and then when he's sharp, like you see with the physical and the mental, he's a very impactful player. So one of our strongest (performers).”

Since the restart of the season in July, Nwobodo has appeared in every match and started all but one. He has been a key reason why The Orange and Blue have been a collective 5-2-1 in the eight matches across all competitions that FCC have played.

“I feel good, I feel good,” Nwobodo said of his current health and form after the victory over NYCFC. “I can not always control what happens, but I always want to be here, especially on the pitch because if I'm on the pitch, then I feel like I can help more than when I'm injured and I'm on the outside.”

“Even if I'm wishing the team well and I'm behind the team. It's not enough. It's not what I want to do. I want to feel like I can go home and know that hey, ‘I gave my best,’ and not relying on people to do it for me,” Nwobodo continued. “I can do more if I'm part of the team. So I feel excited knowing that I'm healthy, and the team is going in the right direction. So yeah, it's a good feeling.”

FC Cincinnati continue their 2026 campaign, and the next time Obi Nwobodo appears, he will begin his trek toward the next milestone: 200 appearances. Up next are the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, August 20, at TQL Stadium, but the earliest match 200 could come would be sometime in 2027. Until that time comes, as always, Obi will be focused on the next match, and, as in this 150th, he will prioritize winning that game over everything else.

“At the end of the day, yeah, I'm excited, especially knowing that it happened and then we got a win today,” Nwobodo said of his 150th match with FCC. "So it all makes for a good journey, and, hopefully, we can go for more and more success.”
